Fearless Dilettante Football Predictions

Another week is here. Here you go!

Xavier Hawks 35, Clintonville Truckers 24 - yes, their nickname really is the Truckers. And they're in second place. But the mighty Hawks will prevail.

Monmouth Scots 42, Beloit Bucs 14 - This will be second time my beloved Bucs lose to a team with the nickname Scots. Perhaps they could beat a team from the Isle of Wight....

Wisconsin Badgers 55, The Citadel 14 - if this is even close, Bucky should hang his head in shame. Next year they plan to schedule Culver Military Academy.

Green Bay Packers 21, New York Giants 17 - No Eli Manning, no Brandon Jacobs. No chance. And maybe Brett Favre will actually throw a touchdown pass against the kerosene-doused Giants defense.

Bonus area high school pick - White Bear Lake 21, Mounds View 14. Adam Weber's alma mater will have a tough time winning in White Bear. Next week we'll weigh in on mighty Irondale in this space.

Wisconsin's non-league football schedule next year includes the combined frosh/soph football squad at St. John's Military Academy, the Friends of Maranatha Baptist Bible High School Academy and the prisoners of Sturtevant St. Bonaventure.

Hey Mills (who I'm guess is anonymous) who's Marquette playing this weekend. Oh, that's right, Marquette doesn't have a football team, Never mind...

I surely remember the "Friends of the Maranatha Baptist Bible High School Academy." I'm hoping the Badgers can figure out a way to get Milwaukee Pio Nono on the schedule, too. Or, alternatively, Mauston Madonna.

And I'm not going to pick on Marquette too much - based on the available evidence, Beloit College doesn't have a football team this year, either.

Marquette is hosting a top 75 basketball recruit this weekend (Lance Goulbourne), which, at least in my view, is infinitely more interesting than watching UW pound hapless Citadel.

Pittsville Maryheart, Milwaukee Notre Dame, Prairie du Chien Campion and the Flying Dutchmen of Little Chute St. John might also be available for Bo and Brett.

Mr. D said...

Naah - they don't want to play Pittsville Maryheart. That would be an "L" for sure.

I don't even know where Pittsville is, for goodness sakes. Ah, the glories of the old WISAA, or maybe even the WCIAA.

Marquette hosts a top 75 recruit, while Wisconsin has already completed their recruiting class... Still chasing, still chasing....

Chasing perhaps, but UW's class is nothing to get too excited about. Marquette has a chance to land 4 Top 100 kids in Scout's rankings, including No. 15 Iman Shumpert of Oak Park, a guy good ole Bo passed on when he could have had him.

MU may be chasing, but it's nothing like the all-sprint UW had to endure just to stay on the same page during the McGuire Era. Wonder how Mr. Hughes is doing these days. Boy I LOVE that picture. :)

Pittsville, by the way, is located in the exact center of Wisconsin. I've been there and it says so on the Population sign. Maryheart was a tiny Catholic high school that closed in the mid 1960s.

Bring back the WCIAA and it's primary sponsor, Graf's soda.

Do you think that all of Marquette's recruits will qualify academically and manage to stay out of trouble with the law this year? I realize that this will open up a spate of comebacks regarding UW's football players. Instead, I would appreciate it if you would just answer the question. Grandpa Graf wants to know...

Who knew we'd have a UW/Marquette basketball feud erupt on a football thread?

Here's the proprietor's view - I grew up an MU fan and they still have my primary allegiance, but I root for the Badgers against pretty much everyone else. Personally I think it's great that both teams are now elite squads. I think MU will probably have the advantage this year, but Bo is a good coach and he does have some talent coming back. Bucky is a long way from the days of the Hughes brothers.

We don't currently have D-I basketball in Minnesota, although Tubby will try to change that. Last year the best team in the state was Winona State.

Oh, as for the picks:

Actual results:

Clintonville 41, Xavier 0. Guess I was a little off on this one. I see that a young Jirschele, a legendary name in Clintonville, led the charge for the Truckers.

Monmouth 45, Beloit 0. Sigh.

Badgers 45, Citadel 31. The Badgers may be the only team that wins games and simultaneously falls in the AP Poll. Bucky may have talent on defense, but the Badgers have now struggled for the three consecutive weeks against spread offenses. They'll see some more, soon.

Packers 35, Giants 13. A happy result. We'll really know if the Pack is for real by this time next week. The Chargers will be tough, especially after what happened to them last night.

Meanwhile, Mounds View beat White Bear Lake convincingly, 28-7, and mighty Irondale put a 59-0 whipping on hapless North Branch. District 621 Football Fever, baby!

Recent scorecard for UW ...

Boo Wade (grades, law, dropped out)

Marcus Landry (grades, inelgibile 2nd semester of 2005-06)

Greg Stiemsma (grades, inelgibile second semseter of 2005-06)

DeAaron Williams (grades, transfer)

Mickey Perry (grades, transfer)

Marquette ...

Trend Blackledge (grades, inelgible second semester of 2006-07)

If you're thinking Trevor Mbakwe will fall into this category, think again. He WILL qualify, just like Lazar Hayward did last year.

Kudos to Landry, Steimsma and Blackledge for regaining their eligiblity.

Mr. D said...

Actually, word I hear is that Mbakwe already has qualified, has enrolled and will be on the squad this year. He worked hard over the summer and got it done. Which means the fans in Milwaukee will get to see some really impressive, rim-rattling dunks.

I'm sorry, I guess the Warriors, I mean Golden Showers, I mean Golden Eagles are better. It seems to me you forgot a certain criminal who was a Marquette recruit who wound up never enrolling due to extra-curricular activity. As fas as losing eligibility, all one has to do is look at the academics of both institutions, and the fact that very few (if any) Marquette basketball players have ever become academic casualties. Tyrone Baldwin can barely write, yet he holds a Marquette Degree, at least with his he is a warrior!

Anonymous said...

Which criminal are you referring to?

Marcettius McGee? Oh wait, he was another UW recruit who got in trouble with the law in a big-time way and never enrolled.

If you're talking about Damian Saunders at MU, he was picked up for a small amount a weed. Hardly a big-time offense. He could have gotten into MU based on a learning disability -- that is why he is now eligible at Duquense -- but Tom Crean opted to go another route based on some other off-the-court issues that had nothing to do with breaking the law.

Pat ... I do not wish to get into the relative merits of both schools outside of the men's basketball program since that is what I follow and know. UW is obviuosly a tremendous school. One of the very best in the nation. Marquette is also a solid school, but I realize UW is ranked higher.

Like your older brother, I believe both schools have very respected programs and coaches. But apparently unlike you, I don't believe UW is high and mighty and simply above it all when it comes to men's basketball.

Scoop, you have the wrong author. Guess who????

Don't forget Superior Catholic, Holy Name Seminary in Madison, JFK Prep of St. Nazienz, and Abbott Pennings.

Throw these schools on the trash heap along with grade schools such as St. Therese, Most Precious Blood of New London, and St. Al's of Kaukauna.

It's a good thing these schools existed in the '70's, as it allowed educators such as Dave Balliet, Dennis Skoehn, and Tom Allen, not to mention the all-time substitute Giles Clark, to collect paychecks.

Most Precious Blood is still open, I believe.

La Crosse Holy Cross, Mauston Madonna, Plain St. Luke, Madison Queen of Apostles, Milwaukee Mercy, Milwaukee De Sales ... man it's a bit depressing.

Mr. D said...

Hey, some of us went to St. Therese. Then again, I specialize in schools that have closed - I also went to Jackson Elementary School for kindergarten, which met the wrecking ball over 30 years ago now.

Hey Mr Dilletante, St Marys doesn't exist any more either. It's been Catholic Central since 1979.

At least you're not Tom Bauer. His Milton College is also gone. The only thing going on in Milton is the occaisional scandal involving drug dealing out of a pizza parlor.

Don't get me wrong, Marquette will always hold a dear spot in my heart. But if Badgey Badger played MU in the final four, I'm bleeding red.
