Intemperate Rhetoric in the News

Things have been pretty contentious these days, and our former President, Bill Clinton, doesn't like what he's hearing:

Criticism is part of the lifeblood of democracy. No one is right all the time. But we should remember that there is a big difference between criticizing a policy or a politician and demonizing the government that guarantees our freedoms and the public servants who enforce our laws.

We are again dealing with difficulties in a contentious, partisan time. We are more connected than ever before, more able to spread our ideas and beliefs, our anger and fears. As we exercise the right to advocate our views, and as we animate our supporters, we must all assume responsibility for our words and actions before they enter a vast echo chamber and reach those both serious and delirious, connected and unhinged.

I might suggest that the former President's criticisms seem a bit, well, unhinged, but that would be churlish. After all, he's got a point. Things can get out of hand sometimes. And President Obama has had to deal with some tough heckling lately.

Are you suggesting that there might be a lack of sincerity on Clinton's part?

The problem for him this time is that information delivery has grown a great deal.

But we'll see. Maybe people are sick of being played for suckers.

Churlish? Why aren't you making an argument for why what Clinton is saying is so "unhinged?"

Because you don't have one, right? He sounds sensible! Seriously! I'm pretty shocked that there is apparently something to criticize about this quote.

A clip from one segment of the Craig Kilborn show does not a mob of angry gun-toting "protesters" equal!

Why aren't I making that argument? Because it's evident. Show me the Tea Party members who have been making threats. Show me that Clinton isn't just demagoguing the issue, just as he did 15 years ago.

And the point of posting Kilborn and the picture I did is pretty simple -- it's more evidence than Clinton has.

Go to a Tea Party and count the number of angry gun-toting protestors. See for yourself.
