Freedom of Speech. . . just watch what you say

Chances are you've heard that the  LAPD L.A. County Sheriff's office brought in the guy who purportedly made the EVIL EVIL EVIL movie that's up on YouTube that has cause the ENTIRE ARAB WORLD TO EXPLODE!

Or something like that. Here was the photo of the event, where five, count 'em five guys brought him in for "voluntary" questioning:

You have the right to free speech, or the right to remain silent. Choose wisely.
This is a hell of a pass we're at, if you think about it. And it's about time we think about it. This guy might be a crank and an asshole, but he has a right to free speech. And in this country, that should mean something. I'm not so sure it does any more.

The Instapundit is in high dudgeon over this series of events:

When taking office, the President does not swear to create jobs. He does not swear to “grow the economy.” He does not swear to institute “fairness.” The only oath the President takes is this one:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

By sending — literally — brownshirted enforcers to engage in — literally — a midnight knock at the door of a man for the non-crime of embarrassing the President of the United States and his administration, President Obama violated that oath. You can try to pretty this up (It’s just about possible probation violations! Sure.), or make excuses or draw distinctions, but that’s what’s happened. It is a betrayal of his duties as President, and a disgrace.

He won’t resign, of course. First, the President has the appreciation of free speech that one would expect from a Chicago Machine politician, which is to say, none. Second, he’s not getting any pressure. Indeed, the very press that went crazy over Ari Fleischer’s misrepresented remarks seems far less interested in the actions of an administration that I repeat, literally sent brown-shirted enforcers to launch a midnight knock on a filmmaker’s door.

But Obama’s behavior — and that of his enablers in the press — has laid down a marker for those who are paying attention. By these actions he is, I repeat, unfit to hold office. I hope and expect that the voters will agree in November.

Emphasis in original. I have to agree. Free speech means nothing if brownshirts can show up and take you away. The way to stop this sort of thing from happening in the future, and from happening to you, is to speak up now and to make your voice and your vote count.

And in the meantime, you can have some fun with it, because free speech should be fun. Over at Quickmeme there are already a bunch of people enjoying conditional free speech by captioning that image. Here are a couple on the "popular" page that are spot-on:

And I added a few, using music lyrics that came to mind:

First, the Clash:
With your hands on your head, or on the trigger of a gun?
Next, Steely Dan:

Soon it will be too late. . . bobbing for apples can wait
And finally the Talking Heads:

Crosseyed and Painless -- the best-case scenario
I'm going to enjoy free speech for as long as it lasts. Lots more at the link. Create your own meme too, while you can.

UPDATE -- a few more I like:

I'd better stop now, otherwise this blog might not get the following seal of approval:

there is more to this guy than you've heard.
convicted of identity theft and host of crimes having to do with the internet, he was barred from ever using a computer for any reason.

this is why they want to speak to him.

So Obama gives direct orders to the LA County Sheriffs? They are his personal army? Obama's Pinkertons? And they are Brownshirts?

Because the Sheriffs arrested a guy who has been convicted of multiple felonies and has violated the terms of his parole.

Congrats! You went Godwin and tinfoil hat in one post.

Regards,
Rich

Gino and Rich, it's not the only reason. You don't need to send five officers to get a guy for a parole violation.

And Rich, I didn't say that they are his personal army, now did I?

I'll have more about this later on.

...and he's been released. Not arrested, not detained.

I'm going to go out a limb here and suggest that he might have his face covered and be surrounded by deputies because a few million crazy people want to kill him.

if you are him right now, you need five officers to help you thru the phalanx of media camped outside the house.

and he was never even cuffed. his hands were in his coat pockets. cops hate that, btw. if they were hostile cops, his hands would not be in his pockets.

Nice Ice-T reference, BTW...

Yep, he's out.

Here's the point -- unless there's something else out there about this guy, he was not a violent threat. People who are brought in for parole violations, who are not violent, are not brought in at midnight by a phalanx of police officers.

I posted a lot of memes on this post, but the key one is the drone strike. If you really want to know what is pissing off the Muslim world at the moment, it's not some dumbass lowlife grifter who posted a video that's been out on YouTube for months. I'd be looking for a more proximate cause.

They hate us, have been raised to hate us, and will use any reason legitimate or not to kill us. They will use any means necessary including the use of their own innocents to accomplish their goals. To say that this movie is the cause of this recent outburvst of violence is akin to blaming a rape victim for wearing provacative clothing.

still, i have seen/had friends/have been myself... on the wrong side of 'hands in pockets' when cops are present...

the key point is 'hands in pockets, surrounded by cops'.

that says more to me than anything else....

For you cardio junkies out there I've got some bad news. The treadmill, stair stepper, elliptical machine or that morning jog are NOT the most effective way to exercise if you want to burn fat and lose weight. I'm not saying cardio is bad, it does help and should be part of your exercise routine. But you're really missing the boat if you exclude resistance training.
