Before he's gone

By the time you read this, Nelson Mandela may have breathed his last. I think it's almost impossible to overstate how rare an individual he is. South Africa has its problems, as does every country, but it is by and large one of the best countries in the world. Just as George Washington set the tone for our country with his leadership, Mandela did the same in South Africa as he guided his land from the apartheid system into a free society. It was a pretty remarkable feat.

'one of the best countries in the world' is an overstatement...

but it is way much bigger better than it would have been under a different steward at the helm during his time.

i was not a Mandela fan, wasnt buying the hype at the time.
i was wrong.

he was one of the very few and rare african statesmen who really did put the general welfare of everybody in his nation first.

I'd say you could remove the word "African" from that sentence and it would still be 100% accurate.
