Has this ever happened to you?

Have you ever written a 350 word blog post and then decided that your premise is bullshit? That's what happened to me this morning.

I'm trying to wrap my brain around the continued success of Donald Trump and I find myself having contradictory thoughts about it. I put up a quick squib yesterday that led to an extended conversation with Gino and then a long and thoughtful, yet dispiriting, comment from Picklesworth. In the process of sorting it all out, I have come to the conclusion that I can't sort it out, at least not yet.

I'm not much for Ayn Rand, but I've always thought she was right about one thing -- we need to check our premises. And I'm checking mine this morning. The process feels like this, however:

I'd still like to read the blog post you reject. As for getting a premise wrong, that was standard for me back in the day.

I've written a 10,000-word proposal and decided the premise was bullshit. So yeah, I feel you.

I tried not to think too much election this weekend (happier for it) but this morning, driving to work and listening to the relentless coverage on NPR, what I kept coming back to is that those who make a living (or a hobby) out of political prognosticating and interpreting should all come away from this year with a bit more humility about it.

I mean, I was convinced Scott Walker was going to be president, so...

It's a good thing I don't aim for dispiriting on Sunday mornings!
