For the record

Yes, the Obama administration does pay ransom:
The State Department admitted Thursday that the United States handed over $400 million in cash to Iran only after Tehran released four American hostages — two weeks after President Obama insisted the payment was not a “ransom.”

State Department spokesman John Kirby was asked at a press briefing: “In basic English, you’re saying you wouldn’t give them $400 million in cash until the prisoners were released, correct?”

“That’s correct,” he replied.
You might recall this, from the Leader of the Free World:

I have been scolded recently for using the term "Leader of the Free World" in a derisive manner. One longtime commenter told me he would no longer read this feature because of my lack of respect for the President of the United States. I would argue the Commander in Chief gets about as much respect in this feature as he deserves.

Would it be parody commenter Rich?

No -- Rich has been gone for a while. All the lefties seem to go away; I'm not really sure why, though. We're not that mean around here.

i dont think it was Rich. he's been gone a while, but his departure, i suspect, had more to do with disagreements getting really personal... a very cheap shot or two from his side kinda started the downward roll... D, when instigated, proved himself the better fencer, IMO.

i didnt have that problem. strange, huh? of all people...

The cognitive dissonance, it hurts us.

It did get personal with Rich, which was too bad. He had an annoying habit that mirrors what Dog Gone does on Merg's blog — the ol' "I see you didn't write about…" approach to argumentation. Since (a) that's essentially a threadjack and (b) stupid (why would I call in an air strike on my own position?), at one point I suggested that if he wanted to pick topics for discussion, he could start his own blog. He didn't like that suggestion and that was the end. Some of the other commenters back then, including our ol' pal K-Rod (whatever happened to him, by the way?) did make it pretty personal, though.

That's an excellent point. I think your history with some of your commenters helped. I think some of the lefties who have come here over the years were trying to bring their version of moral instructed to those of us who are to benighted to see their point of view. Since we don't fall over in awe of their brilliance, they move on.

their version of moral instructed

Let's make that "moral instruction."

Mitch filled me in on that one. I better save that story for offline though.

Rich's annoying habit wasnt the 'personal' you are referring too. he was a decent dude up front, and a bad dude in reality. he took a shot or two at you (personally) that, IMO, was waaaaay over the line. it was the Tell of a loser, who wont accept that he's a Loser, the kind of loser that wants to deliver a real personal hurt as he goes down intellectually... Rich is gone, and Ds life is better for it.

That is true. And he didn't like it when I called that out to him.

True as well. I just wish we could find a lefty who just likes to duke it out without making it personal. Perhaps that's searching for a unicorn, though.

i was a fencer, back in the day. you'd have made a good fencer... kind of... its all about the 'thrust and parry'... waiting for the opportunity... a combination of patience and agressiveness...

what helped with lefties: today is all 'obama sucks and shit like that..."... tomoro's posting is about some art house film that i saw that nobody else did...

Perhaps a great portion of the reason too much leftist thought becomes personal is that they really don't have much justification for what they believe. When you support rent controls despite a century of failure, gun control despite a century of failure (and genocide), welfare despite a century of failure, and the like, you're going to have a tough time duking it out on the basis of logic and evidence, to put it mildly. What is left is the classic genetic fallacy.

To the first topic, it would be really, really refreshing if a President of either party responded to Iranian attacks, or those by Iranian surrogates, by destroying an Iranian naval or air force base, and then saying "when you attack innocents through Hezbollah, we will retaliate by attacking combatants in Iran. Got it? Good."

Whatever happened to Gino's pal Amanda? She was at least a cute leftist chick, albeit void of substance.

Mr. D said...

Amanda was actually originally a pal of my brother Mike, a/k/a the Stinger. I have a link to her blog Memeopolis on my sidebar. She's married to a guy in the navy and she's moved around a lot as a result. She hasn't posted much lately, but she seems to be doing well.

And she's had baby. :)
