Mostly open thread

Talk about what you want. Just a few really quick observations:

  • If the reports are true and that Christine Blasey Ford really wants Kavanaugh to testify first, before he hears what charges she intends to level, they might as well move the hearings to Salem and be done with it.
  • Good for the Browns. It's difficult to explain to most people under the age of, say, 65, but there was a time when the Browns were considered the model NFL franchise. In some respects, the Browns have become the Pittsburgh Steelers in reverse.
  • A good friend of mine said to me the other day, "unfortunately, for far, far too many, what the Church teach on so many political issues, many U.S. Catholics choose to ignore. Not sure how they justify it in their minds." In John 14:2, Jesus tells us "My father's house has many rooms." Perhaps these folks think one of the rooms is a cafeteria.
Have fun.

I tuned into the football game last night a few minutes before the half (there is only so much Browns-Jets abuse I can handle). I saw the Browns and Jets doing Browns and Jets type of things, such as stupid penalties and even a perfect Tyrod Taylor spiral to the corner of the end zone - with no receiver within 30 yards, resulting in an intentional grounding penalty. And this was a play BEFORE Taylor was hit in the head and received his concussion.

From the moment Mayfield entered the game, though, you could see a definite change in the Browns pace and crispness. He was the sparkplug the team needed last night, and if his receivers can just get used to having a ball delivered right into their hands, they'll be on their way. The defense already has some very nice pieces (though Garrett seemed to disappear in the second half), and I think the team is on the rise just as the Steelers are starting to clank, creak and leak oil.

A win and a tie--they're doing better than they have in a few years already. Go Browns! (especially since they're not playing da Bears!)

Regarding the Ford/Cavanaugh (redacted), I think we have to start paying attention to the fact that everything she wants is a delaying tactic that is 100% opposite to how a competent prosecutor would do, and quite frankly 100% opposite to what an honest accuser would want. Ford is not a dummy, so she knows this, and there is a very good reason she's pulling this stunt.

Re: Kavanaugh. I'm not worried. Pre-Trump the GOP would have found a way to screw this up. But now they'll get it right. Sure, there are moments where it seems like they might go squishy. But I think at this point they are just getting what they want out of this: Justice Kavanaugh; maximum electoral damage to Dems.

Two years ago I had given up on voting. The GOP always went weak in the knees. All hat, no cattle. In the age of Trump, however, I will glory in voting. Broken glass? I'll crawl over it. He fights. And he wins.

Trump is starting to remind me of Lincoln's defense of Grant. "I can't spare him. He fights."
