I'm not a big country music guy, but Merle Haggard transcended genre labels:
He died yesterday, on his 79th birthday. He wasn't Nashville, he was Bakersfield, and that made a big difference. He was also prolific and his music is widely available. He's always worth your time.
Merle was a common soundtrack around my house growing up. Which might be why this song has always been the first thing I think of when his name is mentioned.
Okie from Muskogee is one of the earliest songs I can remember. I loved it when it came on the radio, tho I was just kid and had no clue whatsoever what the song meant. I just kept singing it.
