Benster and D Pick Your Games---Malik Willis Saved The Season Edition

I never thought that I would be saying this a couple of weeks ago, but Malik Willis has done a superb job holding down the fort after J Love went down. You really love to see it.

It's a surprise. I didn't think about Malik Willis at all until a month ago. But yes, things would look a lot worse without him.

I've also noticed that the Vikings enablers on KFAN are starting to plan their trip to New Orleans. As much as I would mock them, they do have reasons to be very happy. 

It's the circle of life. Vikings start winning and their fans start believing. And then they get crushed. The only question is when.

Minnesota Golden Elite Rowers of the Boat (+10.5) vs. Michigan Hail to the Cheaters Valiant So, PJ has some explaining to do after what happened last weekend against the Iowans. PJ fell into the same trap that Fickell did a year ago where he let Iowa get ahead, and then couldn't force the Hawkeyes to pass their way back into the game. It seems like PJ is losing a bunch of support among the Gopher fans. Michigan hasn't looked great, but they are at home. This game will be an ugly rivalry game loss for the Gophers. Hail Hail To Michigan The Cheaters and the Best 35, Row Row Row Your Boat Elitely 14.

Peej's act is starting to grow stale. I don't know that Michigan is that great, but they are certainly good enough to win against the Gophers in Ann Arbor. Michigan 41, Gophers 21.

Beloved Wisconsin Badgers (+14.5) vs. USC Trojans Yes, the Badgers are playing a Big Ten conference game against USC in the LA Coliseum. Conference realignment has gotten out of control, but that is another discussion for another day. USC lost their first Big Ten game against Michigan last week in a tough one. The good news for Badger fans after the beatdown by Alabama two weeks ago is that at least Locke has won on the road in conference play. What concerns me is that Phil Longo seems to be intent on forcing the Badgers to play a scheme that he wants instead of fitting to what he has, and that is an indictment on Fickell. This won't be easy, but a good way for the Badgers to show that they aren't afraid of the new Big Ten would be to get a win this week. Badgers 21, USC 14.

It would be a good way to show that, but it's not likely to happen. Trojans 34, Badgers 17.

Minnesota Vikings (+2.5) vs. Glorious Green Bay Packers I certainly will admit that I didn't see the Vikings being 3-0 coming, and even the most ardent Vikings fans would have struggled to believe that. But to their credit, the Vikings impressively beat two Super Bowl contenders back to back, and are deserving of their praise. But the Packers are also deserving of praise. I will admit that the season looked lost after the trip to Brazil. Thankfully, the Packers were able to win two games and give me the confidence that even with the chance of no Love, they have a chance. What is going to be the key to me for the Packers is that if they can get out and score early and force the Vikings to play from behind. They haven't done it outside of 5 snaps this year. Packers 35, Vikings 24.

That's the formula. You have to make the Vikings defend the run. They've done a pretty good job of it thus far. The Packers have the home field advantage, but it's a Milwaukee game which usually means a lot of visiting fans find their way in, so I expect more than a smattering of purple at Lambeau. The team that does a better job of rushing the passer wins this game. Packers 28, Vikings 26.

After ESPN and the CFP hyped up Alabama for a month like nobody's business, the SEC won't have a team in the title game? You know I am going to enjoy dropping some truths that the SEC won't want you to hear.

You better watch out, you'd better not cry. Bensterman is coming to town!.

Meanwhile, the Packers have a chance to get into the playoffs by beating the Bears.

Washington Huskies (+4.5) vs. Michigan Sign Stealers, in Houston Ah yes, no SEC in sight for once. The real winner of this game no matter what is going to be the Big Ten, who will get a rematch next season and the ability to claim that the national champion is in their conference next year. Michigan didn't look great, but were able to get past Alabama. Washington is a team that I love. They are well-coached, play very well, and are untainted by scandal. Regardless of what happens, this game is going to be a lot of fun and should be at the level of the 2006 Rose Bowl. Huskies 38, Jim Harbaugh Can't Win On A Level Playing Field 33.

Do we need to hear it again?

Few things are more majestic and yet more annoying. And the off-color version they sing in Madison is pretty amusing, too. As for the game, I think it will be a classic. Michigan is not a big muscle-bound group; they have superior athletes all over the field. But I have to say that Michael Penix is something else. He's going to play on Sundays and play very well. Washington 28, Michigan 27.

Minnesota Vikings (+3.5) vs. Detroit LOLions Oh my, the locals are not happy about what happened to the Vikings. When JJ got shut down by Joe Barry of all defensive coordinators, you know that you have issues. Now the Vikings are going to need an absolute miracle to make the playoffs, and could see the Packers make the playoffs in a rebuilding year. The LOLions need to get over what happened last week. Regardless of what you think about the refs, the Lions made a number of bad coaching decisions and let the Cowboys stick around to win it late. Dan Campbell may have done a great job getting the Lions their division title, but he still makes questionable decisions in games and is using the refs as a scapegoat to cover for his own flaws. He's not a first year coach, and those types of decisions could haunt them down the line. How a tough minded city like Detroit gives him a pass for his excuses is beyond me, but it's not my problem. Even if the Lions rest some starters, the Vikings are going to have a tough time winning in Detroit. Lions 24, Vikings 14.

The Lions won't rest their starters. I don't think the Vikings will phone it in, either, but the team I saw on Sunday was not impressive. Vikings fans can't have nice things after all. Lions 31, Vikings 20.

Bear Down Chicago Da Bearz Still Suck (+3) vs. Glorious Green Bay Packers Last week was a great performance by the Packers. They did a lot of things right, and just need to win one more game against the Bears to win, and are getting healthier for once. But this won't be easy. The Bears have been playing better, are playing for jobs, and they remember getting blown out all the way back in Week 1. Also, the Bears always play the Packers tough given the nature of the rivalry. If the Packers can keep doing what they have been doing, then I like their chances. Even if disaster strikes, the future looks a lot brighter. Packers 28, Bears Still Suck 17.

Jordan Love looks like the real deal. He's played very well down the stretch and the young receivers and tight ends wearing green and gold are varied and impressive. The Bears are getting a lot of, well, hype this week. I think they are improving and with the fortification of a million high draft picks in the spring, I think they'll be a problem. But in the end, rivalry ownership remains closer to the 45th parallel. Packers 27, Bears 20.

After all of the hyping up ESPN did about how the SEC is a beast, how they are the greatest conference, and how Oklahoma and Texas are going to be such a great fit, it turns out that you won't have any schools in your 2024 lineup in the national title game being held in SEC country. You really hate to see it. The Big Ten is laughing in their offices in suburban Chicago. It turns out that Alabama didn't deserve to be there, and don't forget that the Big Ten makes more money than you do, even with you adding Texas and Oklahoma. The Big Ten is adding cable subscribers at the in-market rate in California, Washington, and Oregon. You are only adding in market rate subscribers in Oklahoma. The Big Ten makes 9 million dollars more than you do per school, and will get to go to the media rights well before you do thanks to you waiting until 2034 to redo your big shiny ESPN deal. The Big Ten has a minimum of 3 games on network television every single Saturday, and the top 3 games that the conference offers have a defined timeslot. You threw away the SEC on CBS 2:30 timeslot. When is your best game going to air? The Big Ten is a national conference. You are a regional conference in the Southeast. When the Big Ten increases their lead on you in the financial arms race, I'd worry about losing your top brands. The alarm clock is ticking, Greg Sankey. I suggest you answer it. But you won't do that. Instead, you will have ESPN and the SEC fanboys continue to be yes men while you ignore that college sports is changing and your cycle of dominance may be coming to an end.

Benster and D Pick Your Games---Who Replaces Joe Barry Edition?

Seriously, I've had enough of Joe Barry. His performance on Sunday was a complete joke, and it's getting to the point that the Packers need to fire every single one of the defensive coaches. The guy has been given plenty of time, resources, and power to mold this defense. It's not working, and you need to pull the plug.

I may be an irrational, shameless homer, but I try to be reasonable about it. Meanwhile, the Vikings are up a creek right now. JJ really came back for this?

Beloved Wisconsin Badgers (+10) vs. LSU Tigers, in Tampa The Badgers have had an up and down season, but the good news is that this team got into a New Years Day game somehow. By the way, the tailgating is going to be an incredible scene. It sucks that there are a ton of opt outs/portal guys in this game. I realize why, but with NIL the money excuse doesn't fly as much. That is a topic for another day, though. The Badgers are going to have to slow down LSU's offense, but the good news is that the Tigers are not a great defensive team. This should be a close one, but the Badgers hopefully can continue their bowl winning streak. Badgers 35, Bayou Bengals 23.

LSU is far more talented. They don't have their Heisman-winning quarterback, though. Not sure who the Badgers will have going, but historically the Badgers play well in bowl games. Is it enough? LSU 27, Wisconsin 20.

Alabama Crimson Tide (+1.5) vs. Michigan Sign Stealers, in Pasadena It's a shame that this wasn't a Michigan-Washington game as an end of an era game, but that's just another thing that the committee screwed up in picking this game. Alabama has gotten a lot better, but Michigan wants to take the next step and play for a national title before the NCAA goes after Harbaugh and he flees to the NFL like Pete Carroll did. With the Big Ten-SEC cold war heating up next year when they start their new look forms, look for Michigan to use their great defense and more experienced quarterback to at least have a championship game that doesn't involve the SEC. Jim Harbaugh Can't Win On A Level Playing Field 28, CFP Committee's Favorite Team 14.

Alabama is getting the hype. Not sure why, though. They haven't won that impressively this year and while the talent level remains stellar, it's not clear they have better talent than The Victors. Michigan 27, Alabama 17.

Texas Longhorns (-4) vs. Washington Huskies, in New Orleans Ah yes, the unofficial other Big Ten-SEC semifinal. Texas might be back, but they are going to go to a tougher neighborhood and a third conference to cause a ton of drama. Washington is a legit team, and I look forward to having them join the Big Ten next year. What makes me like Washington in this game is that they are tough, and won all of their games in the toughest conference in America and beat the Ducks twice. Their defense is very good, and their offense is very explosively deadly. Even though this might be a partisan Longhorn crowd in New Orleans, look for the Huskies to try and get back to the Don James mold in winning big games. Huskies 49, Texas Isn't Back, Folks 48.

Washington has quietly been awesome all year long. They have everything they need to win. And so they shall. Washington 31, Texas 23.

Glorious Green Bay Packers (+1) vs. Minnesota Vikings So in the interest of full disclosure, I ended up  watching the Packers game and missed almost all of the Vikings game last week. When you give up 30 points to Panthers of all teams, you know that the defense is bad, and the Packers were bailed out by the offense and the clock running out in the nick of time. Jaire Alexnder was right to be suspended, as you can't just walk out to the coin toss and almost screw it up. Don't worry, Vikings fans. Jaren Hall will look like an elite quarterback and it wouldn't surprise me if Joe Barry's 5D chess brain will have Preston line up against JJ. But the good news is that the Packers will overcome that to win a game, because the Vikings history tells us that in big games, they don't often win. Sorry, you know it's true. Packers 24, Vikings 17.

I have no idea who wins. I would recommend betting the over, though. Vikings 35, Packers 33.

So, who replaces Joe Barry? This list is who I want to, and is in no particular order.

Jim Knowles: Defensive coordinator at Ohio State. While he has been mostly a college coach, I like how tough minded he is and how he was able to find success at Oklahoma State given that the Cowboys play in an offensive league in the Big 12.

Jim Leonhard: Analyst at Illinois. While he doesn't have any pro coaching experience, he has developed a lot of good defensive players at Wisconsin, and brings a lot of the Rex Ryan scheme with him.

Daniel Bullocks: Safeties coach for the Niners. He is someone who is considered and up and comer and has been a big part of the success that the Niners have had on defense. Would be a good hire.

Chris Hewitt: Secondary coach for the Ravens. Ravens have had a great defense this year, and Hewitt could view this as a promotion given that the Ravens are very stable in terms of coaches leaving. His defensive backs are fundamentally sound. 

Sean Desai: Defensive coordinator for the Eagles. With Desai having been demoted from the defensive playcaller role, it wouldn't surprise me if he might leave the Eagles. Would be a fresh voice and someone who would have learned from his first year being a coordinator. 

Mike Zimmer: Analyst at Colorado. He has a point to prove given how his time with the Vikings ended, and is a great defensive mind. Tough coach, and wants to be in the NFL in 2024. Why not come back to the NFC North?

Bringing Zimmer to Green Bay would be pretty amusing, actually. Don't see it happening. Desai might be a guy to bring in, but I'd suggest waiting until after the season ends. There may be a better option out there that's not on your list. But we'll see. Just don't bring in Uncle Rico.

Benster and D Pick Your Games-----LOLions Have Zero Excuses This Week Edition

Old dude, if the Lions don't win tomorrow, this will be on the level of the Packers going into Arizona and beating the Cardinals a couple of years ago on a short week with a wrecked football team.

Glorious Green Bay Packers (+8) vs. Detroit LOLions So the Packers beat the Chargers by some divine miracle, and now they get a chance to visit the NFL media's favorite team, the Detroit LOLions. Look, my issue with the Lions isn't that they are good. What boggles my mind is that certain members of the NFL media are forgetting that the Lions were good under Jim Schwartz and Jim Caldwell. So while Dan Campbell is doing a fine job, it's not like the Lions have been consistently terrible in recent memory. Heck, the Lions were a playoff team the year that Barry Sanders quit on them for not being good enough. And I would argue that teams like the Texans and the Broncos have also been major improvements, to say nothing about the Jaguars proving that they are not a fluke. Look, the Packers are banged up, and this is a tough test against a good team on the road, especially after the beatdown in Green Bay in September. But what gives me hope is that the Packers have been quietly playing a bunch of close games lately. They just haven't finished. Don't forget, the Lions were incredibly lucky to escape against a bad Bears team on Sunday. Don't be surprised if the same old Lions show up right on time. Packers 24, LOLions 23.

They hope to dine on better fare this year

I've seen progress, too, but the injury list is daunting. It's going to be difficult to beat a very healthy Lions team when half the team doesn't suit up. Lions 27, Packers 20.

Bear Down Chicago Da Bearz Still Suck (+3.5) vs. Minnesota Vikings The Vikings last week lost because I thought that Brian Flores sat back a little too much last week. On that last drive, he was too slow to adjust to the Broncos dumping the ball off, and it was a departure from how he called the rest of the game. As for the Bears, last week was a brutal collapse for them. They were very vanilla on offense, and let Detroit march down the field. The Vikings need this one, and I will default to the desperate team at home to make sure that the Griddy Man makes an appearance down the line for the Vikings fans to experience maximum pain in January. Vikings 35, Bears Still Suck 0.

The Bears? They really really really really really really suck. Yes, the Bears still suck. Vikings roll. Vikings 31, Bears 14.

A School In Columbus (+3.5) vs. Michigan Release the Manifesto On a holiday weekend based on gratitude and respect for your neighbors, we have these guys playing. Ryan Day and Jim Harbaugh don't seem to get along very well, and this game might make the 2006 game look tame by comparison. For the Buckeyes, this game has taken on an air of importance for Ryan Day. If the Buckeyes don't win in Ann Arbor against a Michigan team dealing with cheating allegations and an interim head coach, the crazies will blow up the Ohio State fan sites and Ohio sports radio call in lines calling for Ryan Cooper to be fired. No pressure, huh? I like Michigan to win, as Ohio State is still under the Curse of the Six Game Minimum. If you don't know what I mean, look in the archives. You know what to do, Buckeyes. Michigan Man=Cheating is Okay? 50, #NotMy2020BigTenChampions 45.

A meteor strike seems in order here. On the field, I still think Michigan is the better team, especially with the game Up North. Michigan 31, Ohio State 28.

Beloved Wisconsin Badgers (-2.5) vs. Minnesota Golden Elite Rowers of the Boat Thanks to Matt Rhule's genius clock management and some heroic performances by banged up stars, the Badgers were able to gut out a victory that means the bowl streak lives. For the Gophers, last week was strange. I know that PJ likes to control the time of possession, but they played very conservatively against Ohio State last week. I get that there is a talent gap, but seriously playing that scared? Lots of grumbling in these parts. I warned you, Gopher fans. But you didn't listen and said I had an agenda. The bottom line is that for the Gophers, this game is for bowl eligibility and to keep the Axe downtown among everything they want this season. Badgers 41, Row Row Row Your Boat Elitely 21.

I don't think the Badgers score 41 points this weekend. But they may score more than the Gophers, which would be enough. Badgers 27, Gophers 24.

Benster and D Pick Your Games-----Jim Harbaugh Can't Win On A Level Playing Field Edition

We will be talking about what is going on at Michigan later on. By the way, at least the NCAA is willing to go after one of their big brands. The Premier League could learn a thing or two from them. Longtime readers know I am an Everton supporter, and we got a worse penalty for a breach of FFP that gave us no competitive advantage than Manchester City breaking over 100 charges and Chelsea cooking their books, and the Big Six clubs for threatening to leave the Premier League during the whole Super League debacle. 

So mad at Kentucky they're gonna punish Cleveland State again, I see.

Tark was a cheat, but he was honest, old dude! Meanwhile, last week was a bad weekend for the football teams I love. The Packers at least lost to a better opponent on the road, but the Badgers have no excuses. They are lucky that I want to talk about the Michigan scandal instead.

Minnesota Golden Elite Rowers of the Boat (+27.5) vs. A School In Columbus The Gophers got blown out at Purdue Harbor, and it looks like Row the Boat Fleck will have to rely on the Axe game to get into a bowl game. While I would normally say that this is a trap game for the Buckeyes because they are going to be looking ahead to their trip to Ann Arbor next week, that would be too ridiculous even for my standards. Ohio State isn't going to be looking ahead, and they are going to get off to a better start than they have in their earlier games. While the Gophers will be game, this is a plain and simple talent gap game. Buckeyes 70, Row Row Row Your Boat Elitely 14.

Gophers aren't very good. Ohio State is. Plan accordingly. Ohio State 48, Minnesota 14.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (+6) vs. Beloved Wisconsin Badgers Last week was one of the worst Badger performances at Camp Randall I have ever seen. It's like they expected Northwestern to roll over and die for them, and I'm sure that Fickell was not happy. Nebraska must be the most snakebitten team in America over the last few years, as they find new ways to lose close games. If the Badgers have their crap together, then they can get a bowl game wrapped up, as you don't want the bowl streak to come down to the Axe game. Badgers 34, Cornhuskers 21.

National television. This game is on national television. What a terrible thing to do to the nation. Badgers will probably win. But I am not confident in the slightest. Wisconsin 17, Nebraska 13.

Los Angeles Chargers (-3) vs. Glorious Green Bay Packers The Packers played a B quality game, but to win in Pittsburgh required an A game. The Chargers are a strange team. They have a ridiculous amount of talent on offense, but Brandon Staley has consistently done less with more and just like Mario Cristobal at Oregon has wasted Justin Herbert. The Packers looked better, but this won't be easy. What they are going to need to do is feed Aaron Jones and can someone please tell Watson that he can fight for the football? As much as I wish that the Packer brass would make changes at the end of the year, they will continue to bury their heads in the sand. Packers 21, Go Back To San Diego 20.

The Packers aren't good. The Chargers are indeed strange. Packers 24, Chargers 20.

Minnesota Vikings (+2.5) vs. Denver Broncos Remember when this looked like a terrible primetime game a couple of weeks ago? It turns out that the Vikings have life, and the Broncos proved that winning against the Chiefs was no fluke by beating the Bills. Josh Dobbs might be a hero, but a word of warning Vikings fans. This team will get your hopes up, before finding a new way to break your heart in brutal fashion. I think that the Vikings are going to win this game and put a ton of pressure on the LOLions. If the LOLions blow this chance to win the NFC North, I got something special planned for you guys. You don't want me to use it. Vikings 30, Broncos 20.

He's special, so special. Vikings should win this, but I sense a trap at high elevation. Broncos 24, Vikings 21.

And now, it's time to dunk on Michigan. The Wolverines had one of the biggest temper tantrums that I have ever seen last week, and it was really incredible. The Big Ten was placed in a tough spot, and Tony Petiti couldn't win. If he didn't punish Michigan, then he would have ticked off the rest of the league. So by punishing Michigan, he ticked off Michigan. Jim Harbaugh has proven that despite Michigan having an overwhelming list of advantages over just about every other football program in the Big Ten, he still needed to cheat twice. If I was Warde Manuel, I would be very concerned about the culture in his department. Michigan football and men's basketball are both coached by alums who are "Michigan Men", and both have utterly embarrassed and disgraced the athletic department. Juwan Howard of course infamously punched an assistant coach in a handshake line after a game against the Badgers, and when he released a statement apologizing, he initially misspelled the assistant's name. Harbaugh broke NCAA rules twice this year, and it's not like they are arcane rules that the out of touch NCAA hasn't updated. The dead period and in person scouting rules aren't new rules. I've seen Michigan and their defenders say that Harbaugh didn't know, but that is a terrible defense. Harbaugh is in charge of the football program, and it's his job to be aware of what goes on in his department. To not know and/or not report it to his superiors is a failure of leadership. 

Not knowing things, or pretending not to know, is a central part of life these days, as any visit to a comment section will demonstrate. (Closed circuit to Brad - we aren't talking about you. As far as you know, at least.)

What really sucks in all this is that the Michigan players had nothing to do with this, and are playing football at a high level. JJ McCarthy probably is going to lose Heisman votes, which isn't fair to him. He wasn't stealing signs, and his teammates probably didn't ask questions about where their coaches got the information. I don't blame the players for being defensive of their results, as all they have done this year is win football games, and they should be proud. Blame the coaches, staffers, and athletic department officials who screwed up. 

How about global warming? Can we blame that, too?

Go right ahead, Geritol Fan. Now let's get back to my epic rant. What would I do if I were the Michigan president? I would have fired Harbaugh and Manuel for cause. The bottom line is that those men are responsible for running their departments in a clean manner, and they agreed to follow the rules when they signed their employment contracts. Regardless of if they knew, ignorance and/or not stopping the cheating is unacceptable from leaders in any industry.

 Old dude, I'm sensing a bit of nerves amongst the Vikings fans. They might be spouting their usual triumphalism over local Pravda outlet KFAN, but it's like they are worried about objects in their mirror.

TCU Horned Frogs (+7.5) vs. Michigan Wolverines, in Glendale I'm really glad that TCU didn't get punished for losing an extra game in overtime, and am always glad to see some new playoff blood get in. Michigan looked very impressive against Purdue, and hopefully this is the year that we can get someone outside of the usual suspects to win a title for the good of the sport. TCU is a legit team with a real life Matt Saracen in Max Duggan, Sonny Dykes has done the best coaching job in the nation this year, and it's great to have a team that took a long and difficult road since the Southwest Conference broke up to get to this stage by doing everything right and earning their way up to the big boy table. The problem is that this Michigan team is on a mission, and I feel like they have yet to peak. So while it wouldn't surprise me to see TCU win given their toughness and never say die attitude, I like Michigan to get a chance to bring the title back to Ann Arbor and remind the SEC that no matter their football success, the Big Ten started the concept of conferences, postseason play, and showed them the blueprint on how to build a conference that makes more money and has all of the top media markets in this conference. Michigan 35, TCU 17.

Coach Dad Pants definitely has it together. I am not sure what to expect, but my suspicion is that TCU is an underdog for a reason. They haven't played anyone with the overall brawn of the Wolverines and I see them getting worn down as the game progresses. I like the Wolverines in this one, too. Michigan 34, TCU 22.

A School in Columbus (+6) vs. Georgia Bulldogs, in Atlanta So the Buckeyes owe Utah a huge thank you for getting the last ticket to the ball, but the Buckeyes getting the ticket is a defensible move. The problem is that Georgia is really good, and gets to play a virtual home game in Atlanta where they have played in multiple games since Kirby Smart took the job at his alma mater. Now, this game is awkward for me. Longtime readers know that I despite both the Buckeyes and the SEC with every fiber of my body, for a ton of reasons. But the thing is, Ohio State has nothing to lose, and Ryan Day has a chance with the right results to get the chance to do something that would get him a statue outside the Horseshoe this month. I normally don't say this, but in the interest of the Big Ten, I have no choice. I want The Game in LA for all the marbles and will be rooting for the Buckeyes. Don't screw this up. A School in Columbus 21, Georgia 10.

Georgia convinced me when they destroyed Tennessee earlier this season. I don't see anyone being able to beat them. The one thing that makes me nervous is that Stetson Bennett is kinda frail and the Buckeyes have some really nasty defenders. But while I think this could be a classic, Georgia has what it takes. Georgia 38, Ohio State 30.

Minnesota Vikings (+3) vs. Glorious Green Bay Packers So all of a sudden the Packers are relevant, and there are a bunch of Packers fans getting back onboard. Last week was a struggle in South Beach, but the Packers were able to make a bunch of plays defensively and beat the Dolphins. As for the Vikings, they won after giving their fans another heart attack down the stretch. Unlike in September, the Packers will be at home, and the Vikings will be facing a hostile crowd, a team that believes in itself, and the ghosts of Lambeau past. This won't be easy, but the Packers seem to have discovered some magic. The Vikings are right to want to knock us out of the playoffs, because if the Packers and the Bucs make the playoffs, you would be a fool to bet against them. One last warning, Vikings fans. You know what happens when you get your hopes up for this team, despite me thinking this team could be the one to end your pain. Packers 56, Vikings 31.

Two things. Christian Watson won't drop the touchdown this time. And Jaire Alexander will regret mouthing off. The weather won't be too bad, so the cold won't be a factor. And that, unfortunately, is the difference. Vikings 31, Packers 27.

Benster and D Pick Your Games-----The Curse of the Six Game Minimum Edition

So Ohio State, you didn't get it done last week? Well, I have something special for you that I have been waiting to bust out. And a quick correction. I said that Ryan Day had won twice against Michigan. He's only won once, as I forgot that the 2020 game was cancelled. 

Sounds like it's gonna get all Ole-tangy in here.

You might say that.

Meanwhile, the Badgers didn't play well at all against the Golden Elite Rowers of the Boat, but Sunday went far better. Luke Fickell was someone who I mentioned back in October as a choice for the head coach, but I thought that we wouldn't get him. For Wisconsin to get one of the hottest coaching candidates, with zero leaks until Sunday was incredible and a statement for what Wisconsin can do. I do feel bad for Jim Leonhard, and hopefully he can be the next DC for the Packers. I'm glad to welcome Fickell to the Wisconsin family, and wish him every success.

He's legit and, given how people are feeling about those Buckeyes, there's a certain amount of low-key consternation in and around central Ohio these days.

Oh, but I have more for them. Oh my yes I have more. But before that, note well -- I am feeling the HYYYYYYYYPPEEEEEE! and ready to pick some games. Watch me work.

Kansas State Wildcats (+2) vs. TCU Horned Frogs, in JerryWorld So we don't really talk about the Big XII much on here because neither of us have ties to the conference and wouldn't generally watch those games. TCU has been impressive under Sonny Dykes of all people, and I believe that Dykes deserves Coach of the Year honors nationally. Max Duggan leads an offense that is one of the most explosive in the nation, and Duggan is someone who I believe should be on a plane to New York next week for the Heisman ceremony. Kansas State is always a tough program and I am glad to see Adrian Martinez have success after fleeing from the dumpster fire of the Huskers. TCU did win down in Fort Worth by 10, and will be playing a home game in Jerry World. I like TCU to make it to 13-0 after winning a fairly close game and be a great infusion of new blood to the playoff. Also, it's interesting to note that both times since Texas and Oklahoma announced that they were heading to the SEC, the Big 12 has featured a conference title game with schools other than the Longhorns and Sooners. TCU 35, K State 24.

Lotta purple on display. The Horned Frogs are legit and they will get a chance to prove it in the playoff. I think they get there. TCU 28, Kansas State 24.

Purdue Boilermakers (+16.5) vs. Michigan Hail to the Victors, in Indy Michigan flat out broke the Buckeyes in the Horseshoe and ripped out the soul of the Buckeye program in front of 100,000 people in the stands, and 20 million people watching on television. I didn't know Fox was into televising such destruction, but oh well. Michigan is a heavy favorite to win this game even without star running back Blake Corum, but Purdue is a tough nut to crack. The Big Ten West may have been a complete tire fire all year, but Purdue doesn't lack for talent and are well-coached. Remember, this game is in Indy and there will be a fair amount of black and gold in the stands. I wonder if Michigan can get up for this game with all of the talk of Purdue being an easy opponent. History tells us that the Spoilermakers are for real, and get ready for the biggest upset in a conference title game since the 2003 Big XII title game. Spoilermakers 42, Michigan 17.

Uh, no. Purdue makes it interesting for a while, but Michigan will pull away. Michigan 35, Purdue 21.

New York J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS (+3) vs. Minnesota Vikings The Vikings are coming off a very solid win against New England on Thanksgiving night, and should have no issues in getting at worst the 2 seed depending on how the Eagles and Cowboys do the rest of the year. The Jets are a very good team that has been flying under the radar, and have already beaten one NFC North team in what was at the time a stunning upset, but now is no upset. The Vikings need to win a game by 9 or more points to show that they can win games other than dogfights. I think they get it done here, with a big help for Dalvin Cook. Why Dalvin? Because he starts for me in fantasy football this year. Vikings 49, Jets 30.

The Jets are offensively challenged, but defense is their calling card. No way the Vikings put up seven touchdowns. Of course the Jets will put up fewer than the Vikings. Vikings 31, Jets 23.

Glorious Green Bay Packers (-3.5) vs. Bear Down Chicago Da Bearz Still Suck Last week the offense finally showed up, but the defense was a complete joke. It's like Joe Barry never has faced a quarterback who can run. Both Aaron and Justin Fields will give it a go this week, and this game seems winnable. Aaron always plays well against the Bears, and having the worst Packers team in my lifetime sweep the Bears would be hilarious. Something tells me that the Packers have their get right game this week, and Aaron owns Chicago. Packers 24, Bears Still Suck 10.

The Bears say Fields is ready. I'm not so sure. They are fixing to get him killed. Not sure Rodgers will be that great either as he begins his 40th trip around the sun, but ownership has its privileges. Packers 24, Bears 17.

And now, it's time for A Very Special Comment. 

Bring me the head of Brutus Buckeye

Ohio State, you didn't win the Big Ten, and now the morons in your fanbase want Ryan Day fired and are calling him Ryan Cooper. There are some who are wondering what happened to the team. I have the answer. The Buckeyes are suffering from the Curse of the Six Game Minimum, and will be until things are changed. Allow me to explain.

Back in 2020, Kevin Warren passed a rule stating that to be eligible for a spot in the conference title game, you had to play 6 games. Ohio State only played 5 regular season games after some late season COVID cancellations hit them. By the rules that the Buckeyes and every school agreed to when the Big Ten returned to play in October, they should have been barred from the title game. Instead, the Big Ten made the decision to abolish the rule right before the conference title game to allow the Buckeyes a chance to get into the top 4. That's right, the Big Ten changed the rules in the middle of the season to benefit Ohio State. That was the worst decision in the history of the conference. The Indiana Hoosiers are the rightful winners of the 2020 Big Ten East, and their reward for following the rules was that they got screwed over by their own conference. Northwestern also got screwed over because they won the West fair and square, and instead had to prepare for a different team. Ohio State won, and eventually lost to Alabama in the title game that year. The 2020 Big Ten championship trophy and banner sit somewhere at Ohio State to this very day. I'll give Indiana a ton of credit for taking the high road and congratulating the Buckeyes, which was noble and classy. While Ohio State fans may claim that Indiana lost their chance to win the East by losing in Columbus, the thing is that the rule was made clear at the start of the year and applied to everyone. Until they didn't. 

Hoosier daddy?

One way of looking at it. But pay attention. In the past two years, Ohio State has lost to their hated rivals in devastating fashion, missed out on every one of their goals, and Ryan Day has been branded a failure who isn't good enough to coach the Buckeyes and was handed a powerhouse program without deserving it. I have no sympathy for the Buckeyes. You won a tainted championship in 2020. The football gods know it, and they will punish Ohio State for it as long as they want to. In fact, I am announcing that the Buckeyes are under a curse. They will never win the Big Ten until the 2020 banner and championship trophy are returned to the Big Ten to be shared between Indiana and Northwestern. If they don't do the right and honorable thing like Indiana did to them in 2020, further misfortune will surround the Buckeye program. That title is tainted, and deep down the Buckeyes know it. And for the record, I would be embarrassed as a Badger fan if we had won the Big Ten that year in that manner, and it wouldn't feel right. Do the right thing Ohio State, unless you want this curse to continue forever. 

You realize you're talking about Ohio State, right? I don't think curses apply, or even bad karma, but it's one way of looking at things. And this is your feature.

Benster and D Pick Your Games-----Vikings Still Live on the Edge Edition

 So the Vikings ended up once again riding their luck and winning another one possession game. Now, that doesn't mean that they are frauds by any means, but just remember that 8 of their 9 wins have been close ones. Luck might be the residue of design, but you don't get lucky over 20-21 games in the NFL every time.

So their luck will run out? Perhaps. But give them credit for winning all those games. It's impressive.

Hey, I'm just stating facts. But 9-2 is 9-2.

Michigan Hail To the Victors (+7.5) vs. A School In Columbus Well, the Buckeyes and the Wolverines both need this one for obvious reasons, as the winner will get a trip to Indy and the inside track to getting into the playoff. Ryan Day is doing something that he hasn't done yet, which is coach against Michigan in Columbus. I have some words about some of the crazy stuff I've seen on the web from delusional fans on both sides, so you have been warned. Ohio State wants to claim that they don't get run over, but in some ways Michigan has nothing to lose. And Buckeyes fans, you better hope that your team wins on Saturday. I have something special planned if you fail to win the Big Ten, and that something special won't be fun. With their injuries and being on the road, Harbaugh gets a free hit here especially considering he has the Ohio State monkey off his back. I think history repeats itself, and then Ohio sports talk radio is going to be lit on Monday. Michigan 35, Born On Third and Think You Hit A Triple 21.

I have a difficult time watching either team, but they are so far ahead of the rest of the conference it's ridiculous. Big 2 and Little 12 now. I think Ohio State wins, mostly because they have the home field, but it's gonna be close. Ohio State 34, Michigan 30.

Minnesota Golden Elite Rowers of the Boat (+3) vs. Beloved Wisconsin Badgers The Gophers losing last week was a coaching loss. I've praised PJ, but you cannot be one dimensional at home. This is year 6, and every single Gopher is someone that you recruited. The Badgers were incredibly lucky to get out of Lincoln with a win, but a bowl game has been secured. While the head coaching position will have to stay open and some interviews will be done in accordance with state law, Jim Leonhard should get the job unless some objectively brilliant coach wants to come to Madison that the AD can't refuse. By the way, the Big Ten not overturning that crap targeting call on Herbig was weak. Kevin Warren has already shown himself to be inconsistent with how he enforces the rules before. I think that the Badgers will get the good Mertz, and the Axe is coming back home. Badgers 20, Gophers 10.

Gophers are one dimensional, but that dimension is pretty impressive. Mo Ibrahim is a hell of a back and the Badgers have been completely inconsistent all season. But yes, I think they win on Saturday. Defense will be stout and hold the Gophers down. Badgers 24, Gophers 17.

Glorious Green Bay Packers (+6.5) vs. Philadelphia Eagles Last Thursday was not good. Joe Barry's idea wasn't bad to stop Derrick Henry, and he had to work to get his yards by and large. But where was the pass rush and the adjustments? As I said before the Cowboys game, Barry gets almost complete control of the defense, and he doesn't use his best weapons even allowing for injuries. Look, this is going to be hard. And how come 12 waited to admit his thumb was broken? But lest we forget, the Packers have had a good record against the Eagles since the start of the 2010 season, and won the last time they were in Philly. Call me a delusional homer all you want, but this game is going to be closer than you think. Packers 42, Eagles 21.

Closer than you think and the Packers double the score? Maybe you want to check with Chevy Chase again about the math. Anyway, I don't see it. We now know one reason that Aaron Rodgers has been crappy this season -- a broken thumb on your throwing hand is not conducive to being an NFL quarterback. While I'm not entirely convinced that the Eagles are a great team, they will have enough to beat the Packers in Philadelphia. Eagles 28, Packers 20.

And now, it's time for a Very Special Comment. So let me begin by saying that the vast majority of Ohio State fans are perfectly reasonable people who aren't complete crazies and they are exempt from what I am about to say. Every team has their delusional homers, and I should know as I am a 100%, no-doubt about it delusional homer for the teams I support. I also get a lot of grief for suggesting that coaches should be fired for failure to win championships, but there are some morons who think that if Ryan Day sees his record against Michigan fall to 2-2, that he should be on the hot seat. Yes, actual people think that a coach who has only lost 4 games in total and 1 game in conference play coming into this week should be on the hot seat for the crime of dropping to a record of .500 against Michigan. 

I realize that John Cooper got a bad rap for losing to Michigan too much and saying that it was just another game. I understand the whole mentality of winning a championship or the season is a failure mentality from the Packers, but at some point I rationally expected that you can't win a Super Bowl every year. Buckeye fans, I'm going to say something right now that you won't like. Tomorrow is just one game in the grand scheme of things. Ohio State's  season isn't going to be a failure no matter what happens. They will have had a better season than almost everyone else in the country, and that should be celebrated. At the end of the day, while this game is important to the Buckeyes and Wolverines, there are other games that are important around the country to other fans. The Axe game ain't the biggest game, but it's no less important to the people of this area. Same with USC and Notre Dame, and all of the other rivalry games this weekend. Everyone in Ohio and Michigan needs to remember that this game has been blown up to a level that I think is unhealthy. Every single player that takes the field tomorrow at the Horseshoe is someone's kid. I hope that if the Buckeyes lose, that those crazy fans do something that they will regret online or in person. Everyone needs to relax surrounding this game for the greater good.
