Veep Debate -- Fly Me to the Moon

Very quick analysis from your mostly moribund blogger:

  • Pence was exactly as I expected him to be -- solid, Midwestern, generally authoritative. He stayed on point, never lost his cool, and he did two things to set up the next week or two of the campaign. First, he made sure everyone realized that Kamala Harris and Joe Biden will not answer the question on packing the Supreme Court. This is an important question, not some Matsu and Quemoy thing. Second, he turned the question of accepting the results of the 2020 election into an opportunity to remind everyone how the Democrats still haven't accepted the results of 2016. Nicely done.
  • Harris wasn't terrible, but she's a demagogue and she has a difficult time keeping her cool. The mannerisms and smirking you got on the split screen did her no favors. She was also evasive on several points and tripled down on the dishonesty of Biden's performance the week before, especially the lie about Charlottesville. She lost the debate, but she didn't lose the election.
SNL won't have to work very hard for their punchline this week:

Pretty fly for a white guy

I give Pence credit; I would have swatted the fly away for sure, but he kept his composure. I suppose his days in the employ of Dr. Benton Quest helped him to learn how to deal with insects.

Vogue

It makes no difference if you're black or white
If you're a boy or a girl
If the music's pumping it will give you new life
You're a superstar, yes, that's what you are, you know it

A dance floor sensation of 25 years ago? No. It was the National Anthem:
Vice President Mike Pence walked out on his home-state Indianapolis Colts Sunday when members of the opposing team kneeled for the national anthem, but a report that Colin Kaepernick, the player who started it all, will stand if given another shot in the NFL was quickly dialed back.

"I left today's Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem," Pence tweeted.
Pence almost certainly knew that 49ers players would take a knee; they have been doing it all season. And you know what? Good for Pence. Why not play the game? There's more than one way to virtue signal, right?

Don't just stand there, let's get to it
Strike a pose, there's nothing to it

Whatever point Colin Kaepernick was trying to make is long gone, as people who make more money each time they get a game check than most of their fans make all year tell us how oppressed they are. The whole thing is tiresome. It's all limousine liberalism writ large. And there's nothing entertaining, or enlightening, about any of it.

Shake Down the Blunder From the Sky

Good grief:
Vice President Mike Pence’s scheduled commencement speech at the University of Notre Dame has prompted a protest by senior students who say that Pence's presence on campus will make them "feel unsafe."

Students Immane Mondane and Jourdyhn Williams have started a #NotMyCommencementSpeaker campaign against Pence's May 21 address.

The campaign consists of students holding white boards featuring quotes from Pence that are "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, offensive, or ostracizing" to members of the Notre Dame community.
A friend of mine on social media posted a version of this story, along with an observation that must be made. If you aren't already aware of this, Notre Dame is located just outside of South Bend, Indiana. Does anyone remember what Mike Pence was doing prior to January 20? Anyone? Bueller?

Just in case you don't recall, Mike Pence was governor of Indiana. Assuming the students mentioned in the story are seniors, they've spent the last four years living in the presence of a scary, scary man. You wonder why the heck they didn't transfer to some other school a long time ago.

Based on the available evidence. . .

Tim Kaine is a putz. That's one lesson from last night's debate. The other? If he was the best person Hillary Clinton could find for a running mate, it speaks volumes about the quality of people within the Democratic Party these days.

One other observation -- let's see if Le Grand Orange learned anything from Mike Pence's performance. Pence never took the bait, made his points calmly and and won the debate easily. Do you think The Donald can do that?
