So now you'd better stop, and rebuild all your ruins

The Donald gave his big immigration speech yesterday. Read the transcript here. A few thoughts:

  • The wall isn't going to be built. It just won't be. Let it go.
  • He's planning to hire a lot of federal employees to make his policy work. Oh, goody.
  • Most of the other proposals make sense.
The best thing you can do is read the transcript. Judge for yourself if you think what he's proposing will work. But do think about the number of federal employees he wants to hire.

The additional employees fall into the proper role of govt.

I suppose. If he's serious, though, I'd like to see him start listing some positions he'll get rid of, too. Maybe he will.

that is secondary, and should not matter. first things, D. First things, always. we've been neglecting 1st things for far too long. i'm just thrilled that somebody out there is finally making it a real issue. i'm, also getting a kick out of open border types just now asking about costs and shit... they dont care about costs when the border is open, and my people are paying them... too busy enjoying 'taco tuesdays' and the party music... while my kids came home from school with another notice warning of a TB outbreak, or head lice. (yes, both of these happened in the two years i had my kids in Anaheim schools.)

i'm not only gonna vote for Trump, i'll do it thrice. ( i can and will. i wont post proof,or how, though.)

It does matter, Gino. The more gubmint workers you hire, the more gubmint you have. And if Trump manages to get elected and get his people in, can you imagine these border patrol agents morphing into social workers? Because that's how it usually goes. I wouldn't be so blithe about it. Just sayin'.

Mark, you're more or less saying a wall will never be built because it'll get cut down in a barrage of lawsuits and government workers unwilling to follow the law, right?

Seems like we know who to fire. I can bend on how many people we ought to allow to immigrate, under what conditions, and so on, but I would have hoped we could agree that getting across the border ought to be somewhat more difficult than simply taking a drive or walk. I would hope we could agree that we have the right to do a basic background and medical check on immigrants, and to show the door to those who violate our trust.

Not in the minds of thousands in DC, though. Sigh.

The latter is a larger obstacle than the former. But yes, that's essentially what I'm saying.

We might be surprised by what the Supreme Court comes up with when environmentalists team together with open borders advocates, but otherwise agreed. Again, we know who to fire. And prosecute.

Gino's got a good point on the diseases that come in with illegals, too. If you've given blood in the past decade, the list of tropical diseases they're looking for--Chagas' disease, TB, babesiosis, etc..--is quite the vocabulary test. It's not quite like the list of indicators of homosexual activity they go through, but it's definitely noticeable.

I don't think a disease ought to automatically disqualify, but hey....maybe a waiting period and a vaccination ought to be required?

I want more govt on the border. Where it belongs.

The only error that I think makes Trump's "big, tall, beautiful" wall unlikely is the definition of "wall." If you think double row fencing coupled with ground and elevated sensors, cameras, drones and random patrols is a "wall," I think it's eminently practical. And if you do away with the fencing and simply put in the sensor arrays and a rapid-response capability, the environmentalists will have nothing to complain about. And you should see all the litter these migrants leave on that "unspoiled wilderness." The enviros should be on OUR side.

OK, as our host indicates, I'm dreaming, but I think that if we by some miracle start taking border security seriously, there's no excuse for actual, physical barriers. Look at the origins of where we are now; Congress passed a law requiring a wall to be built, the President signed it, and....that wall looks a lot like sagebrush and cactus in a lot of places, to put it mildly. Government workers (probably encouraged by our current, lawless President) simply sabotaged things.

Now, if there is no physical barrier, exactly what prevents other government workers from ignoring the law and sabotaging the system?

So we need two things; first, a real wall comprising at least vehicle barriers, and second, we need to start sending lawless bureaucrats to prison where they belong.

And oh yeah, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzTZ76vhnKk
