Wait and see

Grip and grin
No one knows if the agreement Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un will mean anything. If someday there is peace in Korea, that would make the world a safer, better place. Considering we were wondering if Kim was going to nuke Guam a year ago, we are seeing progress.

Trump is a dealmaker -- it's been the basis of his life. I have reservations whether Kim can be trusted and I'm guessing Trump does, too. The hard work will come later on. For peace to truly come to Korea, the North cannot continue to have an existential military force pointed across the demilitarized zone. Once even a hint of openness comes to the Hermit Kingdom, it will be almost impossible for Kim to keep control. He has to know that, too. But for this moment, it's worth noting that something we never thought we'd see has happened.

Deal-makers make a point of showing the other guy the value of making a deal. That's business. For some reason, we got the idea that politics is too nice for real world business approaches. Trump didn't just wave a big stick in the Middle East and Korea, he poked folks in the eye with it, using his rhetoric and political appointments, instead of sweet-talking/begging/bribing.

Now the bad guys are eager to sit at the table, at least until Trump goes away, which is the point of John Kerry's government-in-exile diplomacy, telling other countries to wait it out until Trump is gone.

Another status quo upended by Papa Trump.

One thing I've noticed is how completely worthless the normal media is for understanding what's been going on in Korea. They don't seem to have even the hint of a clue.

Other sources I read have been on target about explaining what's happening (and theorizing why.) One working theory is that North Korea was a military dictatorship (with strings to China) with the Kims as a face. Kim has been freed from that control with some outside help (a bunch of people were killed in a mysterious explosion on their mountain nuclear facility, and some military brass have been replaced) and is eager to make peace because the war was never his bag in the first place. He was educated in the West, loves basketball (hence the connection to Rodman) and would like his country to not be hell hole. Further, a separate theory goes that the deal is already hammered out, but is being rolled out in a particular way to deal with western concerns/China. This would explain why Trump is talking as if this is the whole enchilada while the media and bien-pensants furiously tell us how it's nothing.

Back a few years ago it would have seemed to conspiratorial and far-fetched and I would have been prepared to believe solid news from respected organizations. Now it's just the opposite.

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That may be a great point to carry up. I supply the ideas above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you carry up where crucial factor shall be working in trustworthy good faith. I don?t know if greatest practices have emerged around things like that, however I'm sure that your job is clearly recognized as a fair game.
