Drizzle

Not really a lightning round. Just a few random things:

  • So the DFL is going to try to brazen it out on Ellison. They'd better hope Karen Monahan doesn't have a tape. I expect Tina Smith and maybe even the never-to-be-challenged Amy Klobuchar will get to answer a lot of questions in the coming days. The DFL will have a chance to do some message testing at the State Fair and if it breaks badly, you may yet see some maneuvering.
  • We're getting ready to travel again, as Fearless Maria will begin studies at Saint Louis University next week. SLU has been in the news lately because it will be the first school to put an Amazon Echo Dot in every residence hall room. Is it Big Brother? Is it necessary? I'm guessing students will use the devices here and there, but it would not surprise me at all if most of them are unplugged and thrown in a desk drawer before too long. It's not particularly difficult to get information from other sources, so I'm guessing it won't be a big factor in FM's life.
  • I get the sense that our favorite president (he says so himself) is about to flip the chessboard on the Russia game. That September 1 deadline his attorneys gave Robert Mueller has a larger meaning, I suspect. It could get interesting.
  • The NFL has to figure out their rules about hitting the quarterback. My stance on the Anthony Barr hit on Aaron Rodgers was that it wasn't illegal, but it was unnecessary. The penalty called on Vikings linebacker Antwione Williams in Saturday's preseason game was frankly bizarre. Either you get to tackle the quarterback, or you don't, especially if he still has the ball.

For a billion dollar industry that has been so ingenious in building it's base and money-stream, extorting cities and creating it's own judicial investigations system, the NFL is the Gang That Couldn't Rule Straight. I think their new marketing slogan is, "If you loved the 'tuck' and the'catch' rules, just wait until you try the new tackle rule!"

The roughing penalty was laughable (and should be replayed over and over and laughed at), but so was the penalty on the Jags' CB when he tackled Ham in the flat. It's impossible to eliminate head-knocking from the game. Since it's always going to be a judgment call, can we at least say it has to be flagrant or clearly intentional? (Speaking as a guy who, as the Dick Butkus of my Optimist Club league in 6th grade, broke 3 face-masks on my helmet in one season.)

The one thing I can say in Ellison's defense is he's not going on the offense against her. In various other kerfuffles--Paige Patterson, Bill Hybels, Bill Clinton's, etc..--one of the clearest indications that it's not going to go well for the accused is when the accused starts attacking the accuser. The big exception I can see is the President.

And if the video exists, I don't see why the accuser doesn't bring it out. She's already in the news, might as well show it to at least DFL officials and say "it goes public if Ellison stays on the ballot". That's another thing in Ellison's defense--the proof is just too easy.

The DFL strategy to brazen it out isn't a surprise. They may figure they've got enough of a base, and the media on their side, to swing it. They may also have made arrangements with Monaghan to not release the video, if it exists. If the video DOES exist, and they haven't taken steps to neutralize it, then this truly is a massive case of one-party hubris. If the video thing comes out now, there is going to be a lot of egg on a lot of faces, and not even Esme Murphy has enough pancake to cover that up.

what is an amazon echo dot?

as for the NFL, i'm more concerned about that new leading with the helmet rule. how the hell is a RB or a LB gonna do his job? even Urlacher, famously famous for his clean technique, wouldnt be able to play well with this rule.

One of those "smart speakers" that you can bark commands at -- "Alexa, where can I get Portuguese food?" They can be (and apparently have been) used to spy on people who have them and report things back to Amazon.

Adding echo dots to every room seems crazy to me. But your daughter will love SLU. my wife and I loved our time there.

I think she will, too. We've really been impressed with everything about the school so far. Thank you for visiting!
