Nasty colds all around

Whomp
This has been a tough year in Minnesota for colds and flu. Seems like everyone has had one and now it's my turn. I want to write something edifying, I really do, but every time I cough it feels like I'm getting hit by Brian Urlacher. Not a sensation I recommend.

So, it's again a bit of an open thread. Hope you're staying healthy!

i rarely leave the house. i'm taking care of the wife, in her weakened state i cant be bringing home anything that she can catch. so i stay inside, avoid people.
its depressing...

Hang in there. I've had two visits with the NP about what's going around, and should have bought stock in the company that makes Mucinex. Advice I heard might help: nasal saline rinse each morning (and/or evening), Mucinex, decongestants like Sudafed, no antihistamines. Also, one NP I talked with just lit up when I mentioned the health club I go to has a steam room. That, and swimming, really helps.

Or it might not be your cold, but hang in there. :^)

I always thought that Urlacher sounded like "snot locker", which is where you've been smacked. Poetic, anyway.

I've never had a flu shot. I was going to get one (obediently) in college when everyone was being told to get their Swine Flu inoculation. I was in line, but it was taking too long and I had to get to a job. All my friends who got shots, got sick, but not me. In '83, I think, I did get the Bangkok Flu that was going around. It was nasty, and because I was never sick, I didn't have any meds in the house when it first knocked me down. Took me a week, I think, to get back to work. Since then, nada.

It may be related to my mom having the Hong Kong Flu when she was pregnant with me. There is some thought that that kind of exposure has a lasting beneficial effect, but it was scary for her at the time since she was already on bed rest due to hemorrhaging.

I've heard that this year's flu is especially bad because the experts missed their guesss on what variation we were likely to face and the flu shot is only about 30% effective.
