One might infer that if this gets legs, the EU experiment could well be sunk. And rightly so--I remember getting some early documents about the EU when I was in Germany in 1989, and the thing that struck me then (having paid 5000 lira for a pizza in Rome the weekend before) was that if the Germans were going to allow the Italians to have anything to do with their currency, they were insane.
