Rasputin in Hattiesburg

It must be boring down in Hattiesburg this time of year. In one of the least surprising developments of the summer, Brett Favre is mulling a comeback. Somewhere, Aaron Rodgers is not smiling.

What do you say about it? At some point the guy has to move on. He will be 39 in the fall, ancient by NFL standards. I sincerely doubt that he is in playing shape right now and if he did come back, he'd probably stand a good chance of getting injured. Because he has played 275 straight games (including playoff games), his endurance and toughness are legendary. And goodness knows, as someone who has enjoyed watching him play for nearly two decades now, I'd sure love to see him on the field again. And certainly the Packers were pretty close to the Super Bowl last season.

My guess is this: if Favre comes back, it won't end well. If I were the Packers, I'd let him come back, but he'd have to earn the job. At this point Aaron Rodgers deserves the chance to lead this team.

aint no way in MN the fans will accept him earning the job.
if he returns, rodgers will have to ride the side.

Already posted my comment on this over at Gino's. I'll just repeat the first word of it here: *Sigh* (and that's not the happy kind of sigh).

The Pack seems to have been sending a pretty strong signal to him that they have moved on, particularly with retiring the number in the first game of the regular season. I heard Al Jones, the Mississipi sportswriter who is apparently close to the Favre family, on WTMJ tonight with The Big Unit, Bill Michaels, and he said Favre is throwing 200 balls a day and working out, but that the feeling Favre has is that Ted Thompson doesn't want him. I am not sure how reliable Jones is, but it would not be surprising if Favre is now thinking about coming back, and it also would probably not be that surprising if Thompson doesn't want him back. I remember one commentary on it that suggested Thompson may have tired of the "will he or won't he" dance at the end of every year, and that to build a championship team, he wants stability at QB. The question is whether he'll have it with Rodgers, given that he is unproven and has some injury history. I have mixed feelings. When Favre quit, I was heartbroken, and felt he should have played longer, but I have kind of moved on with the idea that we need to work with Rodgers, who does appear to have a great deal of potential. However, those of us who remember Rich Campbell, Jerry Tagge, Jim Del Gazio and Scott Hunter recognize that finding a great quarterback is not an easy task, unless you have 20 years or so to devote to the project, and we know what we have with Favre, and I suspect we'll never see another football player of his ability in Green Bay in our lifetime. I agree with you that if he comes back, it won't end well. But it really smells like they are not going to let him come back, and the question is whether he wants to play bad enough to tarnish his exit from Green Bay by forcing the issue and trying to work out a way to play for another team.

Good grief.
That is all.
