Becker and Fagen Explain

Sometimes the answers lie in the classics.

I'm not one to look behind I know that times must change
But over there in Barrytown they do things very strange
And though you're not my enemy
I like things like they used to be
And though you'd like some company
I'm standing by myself
Go play with someone else

I can see by what you carry that you come from Barrytown

Don't believe I'm taken in by stories I have heard
I just read the Daily News and swear by every word
And don't think that I'm out of line
For speaking out for what is mine
I'd like to see you do just fine
But look at what you wear
And the way you cut your hair

I can see by what you carry that you come from Barrytown

In the beginning we recall that the word was hurled
Barrytown people got to be from another world
Leave me or I'll be just like the others you will meet
They won't act as kindly if they see you on the street
And don't you scream or make a shout
It's nothing you can do about
It was there where you came out
It's a special lack of grace
I can see it in your face

I can see by what you carry that you come from Barrytown

I watched the video on the school voucher program and sympathize entirely with the parents and students in D.C. who are getting the shaft (and for those in other locales who have never had the opportunity).

However, the bit at the end had me shaking my head. They talk about having supported the president and now they're asking why he would do such a thing. I'm sorry, but this was hardly a secret. If you didn't see this and a lot of the other disasters coming, then you weren't trying to inform yourself to cast your vote wisely. I'm glad they are seeing the light now that their particular interest has been trampled on, but why weren't they concerned about anybody else's rights? Would they say that he was doing a good job if he hadn't killed their program?

Perhaps the fundamental problem in America today is that we are concerned with our rights, but not the rights of others. For our system of government to endure, we need a broad majority to defend the liberty of their neighbors.

True dat, WBP.

It's lot more fun to vilify bondholders and hedge fund managers, though. I wonder if President Obama understands the forces he's unleashing right now.

He's merely "walking it like he talked it" - it's just that most people weren't listening, and now the administration's hoping no one is watching too closely either.
