It's a long drive from the Twin Cities to St. Louis, with a significant chunk of it in Iowa. With stops for gas and a meal, it's typically about a 10-hour trip. I spent most of my usual blogging time this morning trying catch up with the news I'd missed over the weekend, but I'm not convinced anything significant is actually happening.
I do like St. Louis generally and Saint Louis University in particular. It's a pretty campus in the heart of the city and it feels like a refuge from the urban squalor that is often associated with the area. We ate at good restaurants and enjoyed some excellent company. It's been, and will continue to be, a great place for Fearless Maria to attend college.

I think you've stumbled onto something. I remember taking a little fishing trip last year, a week without phones, computers, papers, TV. I was surprised when I returned that the news was almost exactly the same as when I left. I concluded then that we are the victims of WAAAY too much "news." It totally distorts our view of what is important in life.
I meant to warn you that when traversing southern Iowa on that route, Mount Pleasant is about your only opportunity for gas, food and bathrooms. I suppose by now you've learned that for yourself!

Yep -- I can make it to Hannibal on a full tank of gas when I drive my own vehicle, but when we rented a larger vehicle to move FM down there, we had to stop in Mount Pleasant. Although there are multiple routes beckoning a driver to Keokuk, we haven’t wanted to do that. Once you cross the Missouri border, you get a few more options.

I drive down 218 quite a bit--my grandmother lives in Macomb, IL, we turn east at Mt. Pleasant on 34--and yes, it can be fairly bleak after you pass Iowa City. I agree about St. Louis--it's quite frankly sad that a city with so much to say for it, historically speaking, has ended up almost a byword for crime.
The first time I took this route I couldn't believe how sparse the population is in southern Iowa. I kind of like the 2-lane stretch between Rochester, MN and the Iowa border, though; you pretty much navigate from steeple to steeple that you see on the horizon.
At Bowling Green, Missouri, though, some bozo in a black Chevy S10 ran us right off the interstate last Thanksgiving. You didn't happen to see him, did you?
