What's happening in Minnesota?
State lawmakers are debating whether Minnesota should place tougher regulations on frac sand mining. It's a growing industry that provides a key ingredient -- silica sand -- to oil and gas drillers for a process known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.
The debate at the Capitol pits those seeking the jobs and money that would come with new silica sand mines against the people who would live near those operations.
Meanwhile, in Wisconsin:
The state Senate has approved a Republican bill that would dramatically overhaul Wisconsin's mining regulations.
The measure is designed to ease the regulatory path for Gogebic Taconite's plans for a huge iron mine in the Penokee Hills just south of Lake Superior.
It will be interesting to see which approach yields better results.

Anybody know what the objection is to frack sand operations? I mean, it's SAND! Somebody wants to buy sand and pay you big bucks for it, you SELL it to them! What kind of idiot turns that away? Never mind, you've already answered that question.

The objection is twofold:
(a) there is some disturbance with any mining operation
(b) frac sand operations allow people to get more oil out of the ground, hindering the world's move into the Toyota Prius
Bubba, there's a third objection.
(c) They like poverty.
WB, technically they like poverty for other people. They'll still be glad to collect their NEA grants and such and get paid handsomely for putting religious icons in bodily fluids and other greatly important artistic work.
At least the people get to be poor in a pristine environment!
Yeah, just ask any missionary about those pristine environments and their "Big Berkey" water purifier.....
