- My portside friends on Facebook are quite pleased with the Bloomberg News "expose" on the Koch Brothers and their nefarious ways -- I saw lotsa links on my feed this morning. I'd recommend they read John Hinderaker's outstanding takedown of the article, too.
- While I'm still less than satisfied with the current crop of Republican presidential candidates, I don't really see anyone out there who would be better than what we have. A lot of conservatives pine for Ronald Reagan, but we need to be clear about something -- even Ronald Reagan wasn't Ronald Reagan at this point in 1979.
- When Benster and I write our college football predictions each week, a lot of what we say is written with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. If you talk to the Benster at any length about football, he'll likely bring up the strange system that college football uses to select its champion. Benster tends to view the BCS with scorn, and with good reason. A lot could happen in the interim, but there's a chance that this year's Wisconsin Badgers team could run the table in the Big Ten, win the conference championship game and end up undefeated, yet still not get into the BCS title game, especially if some combination of LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma and/or Stanford also runs the table. In some respects, while that result would infuriate Badgers fans, it would be a good thing, as that result would call the whole system into question. I'm not convinced that a playoff system is a good idea, but the poll system doesn't work very well.

I'm not much of a fan of the BCS system, but consider the current situation: the Big Ten is most certainly going through a weak patch (even with Nebraska's inclusion), with the once-nominal powerhouses of Ohio St. & Michigan at low ebbs. If Wisconsin does run the table in a softer conference, does that matter as much or more than a school from the stronger PAC-10 or SEC doing the same? I think not.
Putting Wisconsin in a title game under that scenario is basically admitting that their inclusion is based largely on conference reputation, not conference performance.
The easy solution? Hope one of the other Big Ten teams surprises everyone and also goes undefeated for a while. So root for Michigan & Illinois, Badger fans.
