Sports News

A few quick thoughts from from the toy department:
  • It didn't end well for my beloved Brewers, but it was still a wonderful season and a lot of fun. Too bad it had to be those damned Cardinals again. Tony LaRussa is the one of the most smug SOBs in sport and the Cardinal fan base is tops in baseball when it comes to self-importance.
  • The Christian Ponder era may have started last night. And here come the Packers.
  • If the Wisconsin Badgers go undefeated and the Stanford Cardinal also go undefeated, and both are shunted off to the Rose Bowl because some combo platter of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, LSU or Alabama gets into the BCS championship game, that will be the end of the BCS. And that would be a good thing.

As a die-hard Cardinals fan, I don't know whether to be upset or simply amused by that comment. I'm settling with amused because really, it doesn't matter. I just find it interesting that the only people I really hear express your sentiment towards Cardinal nation are Brewers fans and occasionally Reds fans. I don't know if there's bitterness from seeing the Cardinals do well in the division over the last 10 years or what.

Oh well, La Russa certainly isn't Mr. Personality, but you can't ask for a much better group of guys. Besides, I'm not sure that Brewers fans can really rest their laurels on classiness with a few of the characters on their team. (I really liked the Brewers this year, just saying, it's not like they're exactly blameless in the SOB department.)

The whole thing of pointing fingers at the Cardinals just doesn't make sense to me. But hey, if it makes you feel better...

Joey,

Two things:

1) It's called venting.
2) Thanks for stopping by.

To expand on the thought -- remember the history involved here. The one time the Brewers were close to the mountaintop in their long history was 1982. What team beat them then? St. Louis.

I wouldn't expect a Cardinal fan to recognize the self-importance thing, since it's a blind spot. As a Packer fan, I recognize the trait, though, because a lot of Packer fans are the same way. It's the arrogance bred from long years of success.

I don't doubt that the Cardinal players are a good group of guys -- Pujols is wholly admirable and as a Minnesota-based Brewer fan, I saw Nick Punto for years. But allow us a rant or two, por favor.

As a life long Cubs fan, I would not suggest that the Cardinal fans are overly self-important. They are just a**holes.

Hate the Cardinals and LaRussa. Did TBS show LaRussa's ugly mug enough during the series? Goodness. As for the Badgers, 5 of 6 at home, the other at a neutral site. They've dominated, but the schedule is a joke...at least to this point.

Mr. D,

I get the need for the occasional rant. What frustrates me is the characterization of anyone who pulls for a given team as self-important. Sure, La Russa is about as well-liked by Brewers fans as Brett Favre is by Packer fans (I'm a huge Packer fan, btw). But sports and politics have something in common: both have way too much vitriol and neither one warrants it. When people are casually throwing around words like "hate" and "a**holes" to describe their feelings for a person, team, or group of fans, there's a problem.

Perhaps. Although I'd say this -- I definitely know who Dan is and I'm pretty sure who the anonymous commenter is and I'd vouch for either of them in a heartbeat.

Best,
Mr. D

I'm of two minds in this conversation, sympathizing with both sides. Gross generalizations about groups of people are bad. And yet I want the freedom to call Yankee fans evil and stupid. It reminds me of a good line from an otherwise forgettable movie,

"There are two things I can't stand in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's culture, and the Dutch."

Picklesworth's quote was a big hit one year at our employee meeting, back in the day when we were, ahem, owned by a Dutch company.

The neighboring towns where I grew up had a lot of people of Netherlands ancestry, so we always used to say "you ain't much if you ain't Dutch."

Yeah, I've made similar comments about the Yankees, so I'm certainly far from above reproach.

I love the Picklesworth quote.

Well yes, as long as it isn't replaced by some monstrosity like a playoff. The football season is already way too damn long at our 'academic' institutions, and pretty soon the student-athletes will be playing a longer season than the NFL played, not too many years ago.

And for about the same pay.
