Next five

I am doing a twist on the standard Last Five/Next Five posts found so often here. The last five, however, are posted over here. Just like over there, I am going to post lyrics and have you guess the song. Here goes...

1. "You got me where you want me, I ain't nothing but your fool."
2. "Just tell me what you've got to say to me, I've been waiting for so long to hear the truth."
3. "Waiting all night, not a call in sight, I've got the bait but I've got no bite."
4. "When I'm gone, I'll know what I've done, I'll go where I don't belong."
5. "They have never been poor, they have never had the joy of a welfare Christmas."

Ugh, I SO suck at these. #4 and #5 kept nagging at me, and I FINALLY figured out the latter:

5. Everclear, "I Will Buy You A New Life"

I slapped the desk, WAY too excited, when it came to me...

Got me, bro. I don't know any of these and I don't want to go to the Google. #4 is somewhat like "Don't Take Me Alive" by Steely Dan, but (a) I don't think that's right and (b) I'd be very surprised if that song was on your iPod. The ones on Stinger Nation beat my pair of jacks, too.

Mr. D, while #4 is not "Don't Take Me Alive," that song is on my iPod. Don't underestimate your influence on my taste in music.

I'm stumped. I am much better at this when Mark creates the list. Must have something to do with an age gap, and the fact that Mark and I are old farts.

BTW...since we are talking about music, can I ask if you guys ever listen to Sound Opinions? It's a rock music talk show hosted by Greg Kot and Jim Derogaitis, who are the rock critics for the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun Times, respectively. The show started on the best damn rock station in America: WXRTin Chicago. It moved to NPR last year. It is a great show. Last night, they did a Labor Day theme show on songs about work.

It's amazing just how many good songs there are about work.

Here's a list of the songs they played (they talked about a lot more):
The Animals, "We Gotta Get Out of This Place," Animal Tracks, 1965
John Lennon, "Working Class Hero," John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, 1970
Van Morrison, "Cleaning Windows," Beautiful Vision, 1982
The Clash, "Career Opportunities," The Clash, 1977
The Clipse, "Grindin'," Lord Willin', 2002
R.E.M., “Finest Worksong,” Document, 1987
Bob Marley & the Wailers, “Night Shift,” Rastaman Vibration, 1976
The Jam, “Smithers-Jones” (Single Version), 1979
Lou Reed, “Don’t Talk to Me About Work, Legendary Hearts, 1983
The Flaming Lips, “Bad Days” Clouds Taste Metallic, 1995
The Isley Brothers, “Work to Do,” Brother, Brother, Brother, 1972

Rich

Rich,

I'll have to check that out. I used to read Kot regularly when I was in Chicago and he knows his stuff. There are some fabulous songs in that list, too. I'm especially fond of "Cleaning Windows" and "Career Opportunities." This would also be a good topic for a future "Guilty Pleasures." Would love to see Fearless Maria's take on some of these.

Oh, and big agreement on WXRT, of course. I'm listening to Flashback on the internet as I type this, which I do just about every Saturday when I have the chance.
