Open thread

Wrote a long piece last night, but ran out of time this morning. So the floor is yours.

I understand why the Packers traded Ty Montgomery given he wasn't much of a factor in their offense and then made a costly error in Sunday's game against the Rams. But what's up with the Clinton-Dix trade? I get that he was going to be a free agent after this season but why let him go now when he can provide value for a Packers team still in the postseason hunt?

HHCD is an interesting case. He had a significant dropoff in performance last season, to the point where he was essentially yanked from the field in the season ending game in Detroit. He’s also a clubhouse lawyer type. I think the Packers were tempted to get rid of him then, but they didn’t have anyone to replace him. The Packers quietly picked up Bashaud Breeland early in the season; he’s been injured, but he’s ready to go now. The word I’m hearing is the Packers will move Tramon Williams to safety and give Breeland the CB snaps Williams was getting before. Now that Jaire Alexander has demonstrated he’s ready for major minutes at CB, they probably felt they could make the move. And a 4th round pick has value; had HHCD left via free agency, and he would have, the Packers may have received a compensatory pick, but maybe not, depending on how many guys they sign in the offseason. Gutekunst has about $40M in cap money to spend in the offseason, so by the NFL formula the incoming guys could cancel out the value of the guys who were going to leave. Bird in the hand, as they say.
