Cue the Calliope

The wildest dreams of the assembled hordes of Bristol, CT have come true. Brett Favre will be reporting to the Packers tomorrow.

The author of the piece I've linked to is Gene Wojciechowski. He wrote a very good book about 20 years ago concerning the sportswriting business. The book is titled Pond Scum and Vultures. I have a copy. Seems pretty prescient, since that's what we've been dealing with throughout this farce.

We'll see you on the field, Brett. You've gotten what you wanted. Now I hope that Mike McCarthy closes practice to the press for the next three weeks and that all the satellite trucks are forced to decamp in Little Suamico. That would be what I want.

Brian Brohm is the future QB of Green Bay, once Favre retires for good. That's because Aaron Rodgers will leave GB after this season (probably with one finger in the air).

I agree, Brad. And I won't blame him. Maybe he can be the quarterback for your Vikings if T-Jack fails....

Dunno about that. Let's see what John David Booty can do.

Brad,

I take your point - Rodgers hasn't really proven anything yet.

Aside from the too-easy joke about the Vikings having historical problems with Booty calls, I don't think Booty will ever be much more than a backup. He was successful at Southern Cal but the track record for SC quarterbacks hasn't been great (cf. Matt Leinart). And Leinart was far superior to Booty in college.

Just a guess, but I suspect that Booty might turn out to be as good a QB as another former SC quarterback who played for the Vikings. You might remember him - fella by the name of Salisbury.

Brad,

If you think John David Booty will be the Vikings Savior THIS year, then all I can say is good luck with that!

As for Brett, the thought here is that he should get on a box of Frosted Flakes.

Which I don't believe. I'm sayin' if Tarvaris doesn't pan out THIS YEAR or next, see what Booty can do. Maybe he will be nothing more than a Matt Cassell (USC QB between Carson Palmer & Matt Leinart; now a backup in New England) but who knows? It's not like Gus Frerotte will be around for another 10 years.

Understood, Brad. You're knowledgeable enough to know better than that. I'm skeptical about Booty, but you never know - Tom Brady was considered a part-time quarterback when he was in college.

The Vikings have had quite a variety of quarterbacks in the 16 years I've been living here. Yet for most of that time they've been competitive. Somehow they manage to play decently no matter who is behind center. Except Spergeon Wynn.

Maybe T.J. Rubley will make a comeback.
